Its difficult to accurately show a Definitive timeline for Putnoe Wood as it is an integral part of the wider landscape. We know that there was a Saxon Settler named PUTTA in the approximate area and that the wood was endowed to Cisterdan Abbey of Warden. We also know that during the siege of Bedford Castle 1224, Putnoe Wood was devastated by the Royal Forces of Henry III. Documents from the time show that compensation was received by Warden Abbey up to 1334 for the ravaged woodland. And in 1798 Charles Abbot's "Flora Bedfordiensis". was the first botanical records for Putnoe Wood.
